Early fly reels placed the crank handle on the right side of the reel. Most had no drag mechanism, but were fitted with a click/pawl mechanism intended to keep the reel from overrunning when line was pulled from the spool. To slow a fish, the angler simply applied hand pressure to the rim of the revolving spool (known as “palming the rim”).

On the downside, like all closed-face reels, Braided Line is unfortunately not an option. Start by dangling your rig or lure about two feet from the end of the rod, turn your body feet to face the direction that you would like to cast, and push the casting button in. Unfortunately, Braided Line is not an option when using a closed-face Reel, and manufacturers strongly suggest using this type of fishing line on their products. I advise holding the line between your index finger and thumb, approximately six inches from the hole of the cone. This will ensure there is sufficient tension on the line between these two points. Continue reeling until the specified length is required, it is important to not overload the spool.

It is recommended that you tie an additional overhand knot for extra security. A closed-face reel is also known as a “Spincaster” reel and in many ways is similar to an open-faced fishing reel. Pick up the pole and place the spool of line on the floor so that it comes off in a counter-clockwise direction.

But you do want to get as much braided line on there as possible so you’ll be able to cast sufficiently far. Once it’s done, clip the end of the line and put it through the remaining eyes, tying your end knot or however you want to secure it. Now that you’ve covered the spool, cut the line past the first eye. Once the braided is attached, make sure it’s tight, and there are no twists or tangles. A common rule of thumb is that the lighter the line, the smaller the reel needs to be. So check and make sure your reel matches the fishing line you’re going to use.
